Muslim-Muslim ticket: Caution Babachir Lawal, group tells FG

The Christian Youth Movement for Tinubu-Shetima presidential bid has called on the Federal Government and all security agencies to call a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, to order over his comments on the Muslim-Muslim ticket by the All Progressives Congress,  saying his comments could throw the nation into a religious crisis.

This is coming after the former SGF claimed on Sunday that both the APC’s presidential candidate and his running mate, Bola Tinubu, and Kashim Shettima, respectively, were frustrating reconciliation moves on the same faith ticket.

The youth group, in a statement issued by its Coordinator and Public Relations Officer, Adeleke Emmanuel and Ogumah Segun on Tuesday, said Lawal did not have the moral grounds to speak for the Christians and rather, was being ‘more Catholic than the Pope.’

The statement read, “We have observed that since the APC vice-presidential ticket was given to Shettima, contrary to his unbridle calculations, Mr Lawal has been hellbent on causing crisis not just within the APC family but in the entire country by trying very hard albeit fruitlessly to create a bad impression in the minds of the unsuspecting public that the APC leadership and Senator Bola Tinubu do not like the Christians.

“These impressions, if not exposed have the capacity to create a major crisis in the country. The gory history of religious crisis, caused in this manner, where thousands of innocent Christians and Muslims were killed is still very fresh in our memories. We would like to ask Mr Lawal what moral ground does he think he has to speak for the Christians and even want to claim to be more Christian than some of us?

“Again, as the secretary to the government, what was the tangible thing he did to better the lives of our people? May we inform him that as Christians, we shall no longer allow people whose interests are to hide under the umbrella of religion to divide and drag our country backward for their selfish interests.

“We are confident in the promises of the almighty in Deuteronomy 31: 6, when He said, ‘Be strong and courageous, do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.’ We believe that the Tinubu-Shetima government will impact the lives of people more positively than we have ever witnessed in the history of our country when they get into government because of their experiences and capacities as leaders and administrators.

“We, again, want to say that there are still better positions that Christians can occupy and impact our nation positively. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
