Messi To Accept Pay Cut, Five-year Barcelona Deal

To remain in Barcelona, Lionel Messi has been reportedly agreed to accept a massive pay cut and in return sign a five-year contract.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner seems to be ready to end his career with Barcelona going by this latest development.

According to the deal, the Argentina icon will receive a nosedive annual salary of 50 percent of his previous pay with a five seasons relationship tie at Camp Nou.

Messi’s previous Barcelona deal expired on June 30, meaning that the world’s most high-profile star was free to discuss terms with a host of other European clubs, with both Manchester City and Paris Sain-Germain thought to have been more than interested in securing his services.

Reports have it that the re-election of Joan Laporta as Barcelona president earlier this year is thought to have been crucial in Messi’s decision to remain with the club.

Meanwhile, the situation was a more complicated one than simply coaxing an agreement from Messi. Barcelona has significant debt which has been blamed on the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and other extravagant contract deals.

LaLiga’s Chief Javier Tebas has barred Barcelona from registering new contracts as well as engage in some financial slash to maintain club stability.

Moving ahead with the club, Messi has to accept the drastic pay cut, along with other stars including Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia, Memphis Depay and Emerson Royal.
