Former Cameroon captain Rigobert Song is the new head coach of the Indomitable Lions after Portuguese tactician Antonio Conceiçao was sacked on Monday.

“The upcoming deadlines for our national team require new orientations and a new breath,” Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT) said in a statement.

60-year-old Conceiçao was appointed as Cameroon’s coach in 2019 and led the team to a third-place finish at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations after they spectacularly came back from 3-0 down to beat Burkina Faso on penalties.

According to FECAFOOT, Song will be Frenchman Sebastien Migne, who has previously coached Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Kenya.

Song is Cameroon’s most-capped player, making 137 appearances for the national side, and played for several European clubs, among them English clubs Liverpool and West Ham, France’s Metz and Turkey’s Galatasaray.

The 45-year-old former defender was most recently the coach of Cameroon’s Under-21 team.

Cameroon is scheduled to play former AFCON champions Algeria later this month in a two-legged playoff for a place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar.
