Real Madrid star, Karim Benzema sets to miss pre-season as he tested positive for the novel covid-19 on Thursday after returning from summer break.
His club, Real Madrid have confirmed that Benzema has tested positive for covid-19 in a statement released on Friday morning.
The French international had been resting up since France elimination to Switzerland in the last round of 16 of Euro 2020 on June 28.
While the tournament lasted, he scored four goals in four games, hitting doubles against Portugal and Switzerland, but could not help France advance any further than the second round.
The 33-year old striker positive test means that he will now miss a key part of Madrid’s pre-season preparations ahead of the new campaign.
The team are set to travel to Scotland ahead of their match against Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side on Sunday evening
According to reports in Spain, Benzema is undergoing his quarantine period in Lyon.
A short account from his club stated: “Real Madrid CF confirm that our player Karim Benzema has tested positive for COVID-19.”
Benzema has been Madrid’s leading scorer in each LaLiga season since Cristiano Ronaldo left for Juventus in 2018, recording 21 goals in 2018-19 and 23 goals in last season with nine assists.
