About 2,295 school teachers have been murdered between 2009 and 2020 in the ongoing crisis in the northeastern states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa.

This was disclosed by the Borno Field Officer for the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund, Nguyen Phuong. According to her, “Historically, poor participation in education in North-East Nigeria has been exacerbated by the armed conflict and insurgency, as a result of which 1,400 schools were damaged, more than one million children forced out of school, and 2,295 teachers killed between 2009 and 2020.

“All schools in Borno State were closed from December 2013 to June 2015 due to the escalation of the conflict while in Yobe and Adamawa states; schools have also been closed for shorter periods on an ad hoc basis.”

However, research conducted by experts showed that about 271 students are currently being held by bandits and terrorists in the northern parts of the country.

The Kaduna State Government had on Friday announced the indefinite closure of no fewer than 5,000 schools in the state due to the activities of the military to flush out bandits from the state.

Also, schools have been closed in Sokoto, Katsina, Kano, and Yobe; to contain and reduce bandits invasion and kidnapping in the region.
